Often times, as a new parent, you hear the words “safe sleep”. Although it may sound so simple and self explanatory, do you know what Safe Sleep really entails for your newborn?
Sudden Infant Death
Every parent has heard the terrifying stories, read the news articles and maybe even have been warned by family, friends and doctors, of the terrifying disease called Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, also known as SIDS. While it is indeed something that still happens for reasons unknown, it isn’t the only silent overnight killer of newborns and infants.
In 2016, the Center of Disease Control (CDC) reported 3,600 cases of Sudden Unknown Infant Deaths. Followed by SIDS, strangulation and suffocation in the bed, is the second leading cause behind these 3,600 reported cases. Sadly, among these reports, strangulation & suffocation is something that could have absolutely been avoided and prevented in majority of these cases. THIS is where safe sleep comes into play.
Safe Sleep Habits
You can drastically lower your baby’s chances of SIDS & SUIDS bg practicing safe sleep habits, at all times. Safe sleep habits include (but are not limited to)...
- swaddling
- snug fitting swaddles
- proper fitting pajamas
- 1 baby per crib
- AAP certified crib or bassinet
- NO bumpers in crib
- NO pillows in crib
- NO blankets in crib
- NO stuffed animals in crib
- Baby sleeping on his/her back
- Avoid falling asleep nursing or rocking
- NO sleeping in the car seat, while in the home
Never leave your baby in an unsafe sleep environment, especially without supervision.
